HD on Freeview...

DTG group announces its specifications for HD on Freeview.

HD (High Definition) is planned to be available on Freeview from late 2009, three Freeview slots have already been allocated.

One is for ITV, Ulster (UTV), Scotland (STV) and Channel TV, while the other has gone to Channel 4 and S4C in Wales.

The BBC will also be broadcasting its HD service on Freeview and viewers should be able to watch these three services from late 2009. The first region to broadcast these services will be the Granada region.

A Rolling Programme

They will be available on other regions as the rest of the country switches over to digital TV. Ofcom is currently examining two applications to run a fourth HD service on Freeview.

Five’s proposal would see it launch its HD service by the end of 2010, while the Channel4/S4C proposal would see it launch its HD channel by the end 2011/early 2012 at the latest. Ofcom expects to make a decision bid for the fourth slot in April.

The transmission mode for HD on Freeview will be different from current SD (Standard Definition) TV signals. A new Set Top Box will be required if the display hasn't facilities to upgrade to the new standards.

Fancy a Quick Fact?

European TV has two flavours of HDTV:

720 lines, 50 frames per second

or

1080 lines, 25 frames per second,
where each frame is split into two
interwoven fields, giving 50
overlapping fields per second.

  New Transmission Standards

HD on Freeview will use MPEG4 and DVB-T2. These new standards, only recently developed allow a multiplex to carry about four HD channels.
